Burn Permit Information

Burn permits must be obtained at the Town Office from the Code

Enforcement Officer or at the Fire Station from the Fire Chief.

State law prohibits the burning of combustible trash, which includes paper, cardboard, treated wood, plastics, food wastes, etc.

Permits are generally issued for burning after 5 pm on weekdays and for burning all day on weekends. Depending on weather and other conditions, additional restrictions may be imposed &/or burning may be suspended.

Except during extreme weather conditions, two-day permits may be issued. Permits covering the weekend may be issued on Tursday or Friday, weather permitting.

All campfires in the Town of Dedham require an open burning permit. For single residential property use, these may be issued as a seasonal permit. The following are required for residents to maintain the permit:

  • Surface fuels shall be removed to mineral soil around the fireplace or grill for a distance equal to the diameter or width of the unit. (Example: a 24" diameter fireplace needs to have a 24" wide mineral strip surrounding the entire fireplace.)
  • No accumulation of litter or other combustibles shall accumulate in the mineral strip area.
  • All branches overhanging grills or fireplaces within 15 feet must be removed.
  • An area immediately surrounding the fireplace or grill shall be cleared of underbrush and unmoved grass for 15 feet.
  • Fireplaces shall be located at least 20 feet from parked vehicles, awnings, tents, and other camping materials.
  • Campfires will NOT be used for burning brush or household trash.
  • All fire shall be totally extinguished by campers/homeowners before they retire for the evening.
