Lucerne-in-Maine Village | Dedham School

Long years ago, these areas were hunting and fishing grounds of the Native Americans, both at Green Lake and Dedham Village. Mrs. Bertha Black remembered their camping in what is now Mr. Cardimino's gravel pit. They gathered berries and fished. They also searched for clay for paint and pottery near the Linnus Pond (Dr.Brown) place in Holden.

One of General Washington's loyal allies, Orono, the last of a line Chieftons, watched over them anxiously. After the Indians lost control of the land, it remained unchanged for many years.
