Business name registration The State of Maine adopted legislation which requires sole proprietors who operate their businesses under a name other than their full legal name to register that business name with the Town Office in which the business is located. A similar law applies to associations. This law was adopted to protect both the business owner and the general public. Examples of entities which would be required to register their business name: ABC Electric J Doe Woodworking Smith Bookkeeping A one-time fee of $ 5 is assessed. Form attached.
